How to Stay Motivated While Working Remote

Whether you’re a freelancer, independent contractor, or remote worker who primarily works alone, one of the biggest challenges to overcome is staying motivated. Now, more than ever, working at home can be a struggle when it comes to motivation. Mid-day coffee meetings have turned into virtual Zoom meetings or phone calls, and the bed feels like the perfect place to answer emails. As we shift into a #workfromhome society due to the COVID-19 pandemic, here are five ways to stay motivated when working in isolation.

Get an early start.

Without a commute to the office, it can be tempting to set your alarm for the time you want to “clock” in and start work. But, according to productivity research, early risers are more productive, proactive and persistent throughout their days. Waking up early gives you time to get what you want to be done before diving into those emails or crossing things off your to-do list. Take this time to make a healthy breakfast, read, meditate, or workout.

Set a schedule and stick to it.

Even though you have the freedom to set your own hours, having a daily schedule creates a routine so that you know what to get done and when to do it. It’s important to have a schedule when working alone. Try to maintain the same schedule you did when you worked at an office. This will help you feel more structured and efficient, along with keeping your attention focused on the task at hand.

Ditch the pyjamas and get out of bed.

Do not work in bed! We repeat, do not work in bed! Did you know that your brain can associate a certain space with a need to be productive? When you are sitting at a desk, over time your brain associates the desk space with productivity. And when you’re laying in bed, your brain will associate the space with sleep and you may not be as productive OR you risk the chance of not being able to shut off your work brain when you decide to sleep. Plus it’s way too easy to close your eyes and take a quick nap in between emails… we’re not speaking from experience here ;) Set boundaries for your bed by getting up, getting dressed, and signalling to your brain that it’s time to do work.

Increase your mental and physical energy.

If you notice yourself feeling distracted or frustrated by your daily routine, you might require a change of scenery. Hit pause on what you’re doing and get your energy up. Break up your day by scheduling a workout, taking a walk around the neighbourhood (be safe - don’t forget your mask or hand sanitizer), or check-in with family and friends.

Stay connected.

Now more than ever, we need to find ways to connect with and stay connected to other people. Social media is the best way to stay in touch and share up-to-date information with customers, clients, and colleagues.

The key to staying motivated when working from home includes setting up a dedicated workspace, taking regular short breaks, staying connected with colleagues, and dressing as if you are going to the office.
